2016 is final year of ministry for Sandi Patty

By the end of this year, Christian music icon Sandi Patty will be putting down the microphone one last time after more than three decades. She's trading all that for a home life in Oklahoma with her grandson and two more grandchildren on the way.

"No matter what you do, there comes a time when you should step away," Patty said. "And mine has finally come."

This tour, she says, is really for the audience. It will include medleys of some of her songs and montages of videos from her past performances.

Patty grew up singing in the church. Her first solo was at 2 1/2. Her dad was a singer and her mom a pianist.

She didn't intend this career. In fact, she went to college to become a teacher, but "the doors just started opening when I was in college for me to sing here and there."

Her official career began during college when she began singing backup vocals for the Bill Gaither Trio. The rest is history. Sandi has five Grammy Awards, four Bilboard Music Awards, three platinum records, five gold records, and more than 40 Dove Awards. She's performed for presidents including at the inaugurations of George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and at the dedication of the Camp David Chapel. But she was catapulted into the national spotlight when she performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in 1986.
